While there was no country of the Germans in the Early Modern era, the state known as the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation held within its borders an eclectic collection of duchies, principalities, petty kingdoms and free cities, all sharing a common German language and culture. And it is these Germans of the Reformation who were responsible for some of the most important theological and scientific advances of their time, advances which would lay the foundation for unprecedented progress, the likes of which humankind has rarely seen. The halls of universities founded during this era are still graced by curious students to this day, and anyone who has since opened a book has been able to do so because of German ingenuity.
