This mod adds the Sulu as a selectable culture in the Early Modern Era. No other cultures are replaced, and the mod does not change anything outside of this specific culture.

The Sulu are also part of my Culture Super Pack.

This mod is centered on pushing the player into a different playstyle. Please read the description below to see all of the effects of this culture.

The Sulu have their own Legacy Trait, Emblematic Quarter, and Emblematic Unit. Info below:

Affinity: Militarist
Legacy Trait: Magooray: No War Support penalty from losing battles or retreating
Emblematic District: Pirates’ Mooring: +1 Money per unique Luxury Resource per current war that you started; +25 Money, +25 Science, and +25 Influence per ransack; +2 Combat Strength on Lanongs while ransacking; +1 Combat Strength on all other units while ransacking; +20 Fortification; +10 Stability; Naval unit spawn point; Increases movement cost for enemy units within 2 tiles; Can be built three times per city; 1 Harbour required per Pirates’ Mooring
Emblematic Unit: Lanong: Replaces the Carrack; 39 Combat Strength and 6 Movement (like the Carrack); +5 Combat Strength against Naval Transports; Gains Money from victories; Unlocks at Naval Artillery (like the Carrack)

Culture Trait (not passed on after advancing to another culture): Pirate Raids: May trade with other empires while at war; -75% Money earned from trade routes; May not build generic land districts

A note on how to use the Sulu: your normal income from trade will be greatly reduced, so supplement it by building as many Pirates' Moorings as possible and declaring war on as many opponents as you can. While at war, you can still buy resources from your enemies, which will give huge Money yields to your Pirates' Moorings. Use your Lanongs to pick off enemy invasion forces while embarked and use your land forces to ransack enemy districts to gain science and influence, which may be hard to come by without normal districts of your own. The Money you make from ransacking and from your Pirates' Moorings can be used to buy out infrastructure and units. You won't lose war support from losing battles or retreating, so you can continue your wars as long as possible as long as you don't let your enemies take your cities.

This mod is compatible with my other added culture mods EXCEPT FOR the Culture Super Pack. This mod has not been tested with any mods made by other creators.

Who are the Sulu?

The Sulu Sultanate was the center of large-scale piracy throughout the Spanish Philippines and other European colonies in modern Indonesia and Malaysia during the 17th and 18th centuries. The raids became so severe by the end of the 18th century that they led to the decline of the Sultanate’s economy. The raids took thousands of captives from European and Chinese merchant ships and Spanish colonial settlements in the Philippines, most of whom were kept as slaves. The raids were ended with the advent of steam ships in the 19th century, which allowed the Spanish to chase down the smaller ships used by the Sulu pirates.
